When picking out your pet insurance, it’s important to be well aware of what each company offers in terms of coverage, price and service. AKC (American Kennel Club) pet insurance is a well-known and established pet insurance company that has been in business since 2003. AKC pet insurance offers two main plans: CompanionSelect and CompanionPlus.
CompanionSelect is for accidents, injuries, surgery, x-rays, Ultrasound, MRI, CAT scans, laboratory tests, prescription medications, extractions of permanent teeth, and hospitalization. CompanionPlus covers all of things CompanionSelect covers, in addition to illnesses (like cherry eye, allergies, and cancer), as well as chemotherapy and radiation treatment. AKC covers all of the above, unless the medication is for a pre-existing condition or you reach your maximum payout limit.
Just as important as what is covered is what is not covered. AKC does not cover hereditary and congenital conditions–this means that there is no breed-specific coverage. The only exception is if you choose the InheritedPlus addon. This option is only available to pets younger than 2 years of age. It’s important to note the hereditary condition, because if your pet gets cancer due to hereditary reasons then treatment will not be covered. It’s also important to note that some common chronic condition medications are not covered by AKC.
AKC offers standard coverage for the pet insurance industry. Annual coverage limits run from $3,000-$16,000, and lifetime limit per illness or injury runs from $1,500 to $8,000. AKC offers reimbursements of up to 80% of eligible charges, and deductables of $100 to $1000. You can get AKC insurance for your pet starting at 10 weeks for cats and 8 weeks for dogs. There is no age limit for accident coverage, but illness coverage must be purchased before 9 years of age. Additionally, every dog registered with AKC gets a complimentary 2 month (60-day) policy.
In general, most online reviewers seem satisfied with AKC’s coverage and the timeliness of their payouts. AKC has received 4.5 out of 5 stars on the Consumer Affairs website, and has a reputation for timely and hassle-free customer service. The process of registering pets and making claims appears to be easy and fast for most customers as well.
